Found in Colombia and Ecuador in alpine grasslands at elevations of 3000 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with a short stem carrying a basal rosette, lanceolate, acute, gradually tapering into a subpetiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter often without leaves present, on a terminal, erect, completely enveloped by imbricate, diaphanous, recurved apically sheaths, to 20" [50 cm] long, cylindric, densely many flowered inflorescence carrying small globose flowers.
