Found in the eastern Himalayas, Assam India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Hainan and Yunnan provinces of China to Taiwan in sparse woods and on forests margins on trunks of large trees and on rocks at elevations of 800 to 1700 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing, monopodial epiphyte or lithophyte with an elongate, stout, slightly woody stem carrying 5 to 8, keeled, coriaceous, linear-oblong, unequally bilobed apically, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the later summer with up to 10, distant flowers on an axillary, racemose to sometimes branching, 2' [60 cm]+ long, pendant inflorescence and carrying waxy, fragrant flowers
