Found in Nigeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Equatrial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Transvaal South Africa and Madagascar at the edges of deciduous woodlands or grasslands at elevations of 900 to 2700 meters as a small to giant sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial orchid with a thick, fleshy tuber giving rise to an erect stem carrying numerous, lanceolate, acuminate, decreasing in size ascending the stem and becoming bract-like leaves that blooms in the late spring and early summer on a subdensely many flowered, to 14" [35 cm] long, racemose inflorescence
