Common Name or Meaning The White Lippped Bulbophyllum

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in western New Guinea in submontane forest on a slender, moss-grown, overhanging tree trunk in medium-sloping terrain at elevations around 1005 meters as a miniature sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with a short, creeping rhizome giving rise to closely spaced, light green, narrowly ovoid, 10 longitudinally grooved pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, deeper green, linear-elliptic, thin-coriaceous, apex acute, gradually narrowing into the base leaf that blooms in the spring on a basal, becoming fasciled, peduncle wiry, erect-patent, 3.8 to 3.6" [7 to 9 cm] long, glabrous, provided with 2, tubular, scales, single flowered inflorescence with a tubular, strongly oblique, acuminate, almost half as long as the ovary floral bract.

"Similar to Bulbophyllum pyroglossum Schuit. & de Vogel because of the hinged lip and the hair-like appendages on the surface of the lip, but in that species the appendages are about four times longer, and they are discrete, subulate projections arranged in rows, not forming densely lacerate-fimbriate keels as in Bulbophyllum leucoglossum. Moreover, Bulbophyllum leucoglossum has two lamellae on the abaxial (concave) side of the lip; these are lacking in Bulbophyllum pyroglossum. The latter also has much broader and shorter petals, and an orange instead of a white lip." Schuit., Juswara & Droissart 2016
