Common Name The Onive Bulbophyllum [A river of Madagascar]

Flower Size 1/8" [6.2mm]

Found only in central eastern Madagascar in humid evergreen forests at elevations of 1000 to 1500 meters as a mini-miniature sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with a creeping rhizome with 1/2" between each, orbicular, depressed pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, lanceolate, petiolate leaf that blooms in the summer and again in the winter on a 1" [2.5 cm] long, 2 to 3 flowered inflorescence with 3 to 4 acute, sheaths.

CAUTION!!!! There are 2 distinct orchid determinations with this name. The first is a yellow flower with purple tinged apical halves and a broader purple lip with hairy margins and broader sepals with apiculate apices. Perrier in his description mentions the apiculate sepals but says the flowers are reddish veined with red. This flowers lip matched much better with Perrier's drawing. J M Hervouet took both the first and the 4th photo, the first is in his newest publication [2018] so maybe he knew that the previous determination by Bosser and Lecoufle [2015] was incorrect The most prevalent is the second, third and fourth photos with a dark purple flower with either narrow or wide sepals with rounded or more acute apices with an elongate narrow lip with hairy margins. I am inclined to go with the yellow flower as it matches most parts of the drawing. The Type drawing by Perier is absolutely correct.
