Found in western New Guinea in evergreen broadleaved montane forest, on trunks covered with moss at elevations around 1700 to 1900 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte with very slender, creeping or pendulous, minutely warty rhizome giving rise to appressed to the stem, elliptic, fleshy pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, subsessile, elliptic to ovate, mucronate apically, median nerve sunken leaf that blooms in the winter on a short, slender, .04" [.1 cm] long, provided with a basal long scale, single flowered inflorescence with at base tubular, apex caudate floral bract.

"Bulbophyllum papuaense is similar to Bulbophyllum stemonochilum J.J.Verm., but differs a.o. in the warty rhizome with warty scale leaves (versus rhizome entirely covered and scale leaves not warty), the widely spaced pseudobulbs (versus pseudobulbs quite close together), the long caudate, ciliate petals (versus petal ovate-triangular and apex with 3 short teeth), and the lip which is hairy on the top half (versus lip hairy in the middle only, the top part glabrous). Bulbophyllum papuaense is also similar to Bulbophyllum stenochilum Schltr., but differs a.o. in the ciliate sepals and petals (versus all glabrous), the petals are in addition about as long as the lip and very long caudate (versus c. 2/3rd the length of the lip and much shorter caudate."
