Found in Peru and Ecuador in tropical wet forests at elevations of 600 to 1800 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with fusiform to ovoid-fusiform pseudobulbs enveloped by leafless and leaf bearing sheaths carrying 4 to 6, elliptic-lanceolate to oblanceolate, plicate, 3 prominent nerved leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on a male, arching to pendent, to 16" [to 40 cm] long, 4 to 5 flowered inflorescence.

Differs from C. saccatum in the size of the flowers, the lip and the densly flowered inflorescence. This species is synomonous with C. saccatum by most authorities but Holtz keeps it separate.
