Common Name or Meaning The Amazon Cochleanthes

Flower Size About 4" [about 10 cm]

This species is from the Amazon Basin of Brazil, Surinam, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in shady wet forests and is a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte from elevations of 150-1000 meters with a fan-shaped spread of ligulate-lanceolate leaves that are attenuate and articulate into the leaf sheaths and blooms on an basal, erect to descending, short to 10" [25 cm] long peduncle with a solitary, waxy, lightly scented flower held below the leaves occuring in the winter and early spring. As this orchid has no pseudobulbs itr must be provided with an evenly moist environment and fairly new media as the roots can be attacked by root rot if the potting mix breaks down.
