Found in northeastern America and adjacent Canadian areas, as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid from swamps and bogs from sea level to 2500 meters with short stems carrying 3 to 5, plicate, petiolate, elliptic to ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute leaves which blooms in the mid-spring through mid-summer on a slender stalked, erect, terminal inflorescence with a solitary [rarely 2] flower and a leaf-like bract arising from the center of the semi-mature leaves.
