Found in Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Spain, France, Corsica, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czechloslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Most Russia, Western Siberia and Mongolia as a small to large sized, cold to cool growing with a sometimes slightly hollow, grooved stem carrying 7 to 12, ovate-oblong, to lanceolate-elliptic, purple spotted leaves that blooms in the late spring and early summer on an erect, 1.6 to 4" [4 to 10 cm] long, terminal, densely many [20 to 50] flowered, cylindrical, racemose inflorescence with leaflike bracts.
