Found in Finland, Germany, the Baltic Republics, Russia, western Russia and Kazakistan in fens and meadows mostly near the coast at elevations of 500 to 2400 meters as a miniature to small sized, cold growing terrestrial with a rather robust hollow, washed reddish-violet towards the apex stem carrying 2 to 5 cauline, densely to lightly spotted purple on upper, erect,well spread along stemnarrowly to broadly lanceolate leaves with the upper 2 being bract-like that blooms in the late spring and early summer on an erect, rather laxly 5 to 20 flowered inflorescence with the floral bracts being equal in length to the flowers.
