Found in western New Guinea at elevations around 500 to 1500 meters as a warm to cool growing epiphyte, terrestrial or lithophyte with greenish brown, clustered, grooved stems that are swollen in the apical part carrying, 2 to 4, apical, leathery, rounded apically, dark green, elliptic-oblong leaves that blooms on a terminal, 11 to 15" [27.5 to 40 cm] long, several [12] flowered racemose inflorescence with long-lasting, wide open flowers.

Related to D macrophyllum but differs in the somewhat thicker, much darker stems and that the 16" [40 cm] long, to 12 flowered inflorescence arise from the apex of the stem
