"Epidendrum cardiodontatum belongs to the GROUP Kalopternix SUBGROUP Garayi which is recognized by the small, caespitose, hanging plants, with stems slightly thickened, apically unifoliate, the inflorescence sub-sessile, and the lip ecallose. The species is recognized by the elliptic to oblong-elliptic leaves, 1.8 to 2.4" x .32 to .52" [4.5 to 6 x 0.8 to 1.3 cm], multi-flowered inflorescence, the peduncle and rachis about .2" [5 mm] long, sepals .3 to .32" [7.5 to 8 mm] long, and linear petals, .28x .04" [6.5 x 1 mm], and the margin of the erose-dentate lip. Epidendrum platyphylloserpens Hágsater has wider leaves, .68 to .88" [1.7 to 2.2 cm] wide, somewhat longer inflorescence (peduncle and rachis ca. .52" [13 mm] long, and the narrowly ovate petals .28 x .08" [7 x 2 mm]. Epidendrum ilinizae Hágsater & Dodson has a single flowered inflorescence, somewhat larger flower, sepals .4 to .52" [10 to 13 mm] long, and lanceolate petals .44 x .136" [11 x 3.4 mm], and the margin of the lip minutely erose. Epidendrum carmelense Hágsater & Dodson is vegetatively very similar, but the inflorescence is 1 to 2 flowered, sepals .4" [10 mm] long, and the petals are ovate-elliptic, .14" [3.5 mm] wide."
