Found in Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Rwanda, Zaire, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa in rocky grasslands at elevations of 1650 to 2300 meters as a medium to giant sized, cool to coldgrowing terrestrial with a chain of underground pseudobulbs giving rise to 5 to 6, erect, oblanceolate, plicate leaves that blooms in the late spring and summer on a slender, erect, 10 to 30 flowered inflorescence enveloped completely by imbricate, papery sheaths with the flowers held towards the apex
