Found in Buenaventura Colombia at elevations around 900 meters as a medium sized, warm growing epiphyte with conic pseudobulbs carrying 2 apical, plicate, elliptic, gradually narrowing below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the late spring on a basal, pendent, to 20" [50 cm] long, to 30 flowered inflorescence

Although newly described this species has been known since Lindley described it as G maculata var tricolor in 1844.
