Found in Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Gabon, Zaire, Tanzania, Uganda, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe growing in leaf litter on forests floor in deep shade of upland and lowland rainforests at elevations of 900 to 1500 meters as a large to giant sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with fleshy, cylindrical, wooly, clustered roots giving rise to an erect, slender stem with a cluster of, lanceolate, somewhat pleated, dark green, acute, petiolate, basal leaves and a few smaller ones on up the stem that blooms in the summer and early fall on an erect, terminal, to 1.6 to 8" [4 to 20 cm] long, loosely, 2 to 11 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, herbaceous, glabrous, shorter to longer than the ovary floral bracts
This speceis is separated from all others in the genus by thelargest flowers and the longest gynostemium.
