Found in Zacatecas state of Mexico in pine/oak forests among rocks on volcanic soils at elevations of 2340 meters as a small to just medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with an ovoid, deeply wrinkled tuber giving rise to an erect, inconspicuous, cylindrical stem carrying 8, imbricate, the first very short, the next two very close together, almost rosular, extended, convex, wider than long, triangular-suborbicular, rounded, from .6 to .68" [1.5 to 1.7 cm] long, .64 to .84" [1.6 to 2.1 cm] wide, below erect and the last adpresate, rectilinear, lanceolate, increasingly acuminate, with three nerves raised in carinas, the central carina most prominent, the revolute sides, the largest 1.28 to 2" [2.7 to 5 cm] long, .56 to .68" [1.4 at 1.7 cm] wide leaves, that blooms in late summer and early fall on an erect, terminal, peduncle .44 to .92" [1.1 to 2.3 cm] long, rachis barely flexuous, 2.9 to 3.28" [7.4 to 8.2 cm[ long, in a subcylindrical, lax cluster, with 9 to 11 flowered inflorescence with erect or adpresate, conduplicate, furrowed, lanceolate, acuminate, slightly exceeds the ovary floral bracts.
"Habenaria ofeliae bears some resemblance to H. cualensis but it differs in that all leaves are free, the first very short, the next two very close together, almost rosular, extended, convex; dorsal sepal ovate-lancelate; lateral sepals oblique, oblong, attenuated; the posterior lobe of the petals attenuated above the middle, rounded; sinus between lobes, wide subtruncated; anterior lobe incurved, poorly reflexed, threadlike, rounded; labellum with the middle lobe pendulum, flat, linear, rounded; the nectary slightly exceeds the ovary; Rostellum a little larger than half of the spine, the arms exceed the stellidia and the almost erect stigmatic processes by .08" [2 mm] In Habenaria cualensis the first leaves are reduced to sheaths and the apex of the upper ones are retroflexed or somewhat incurved; the dorsal sepal is suborbicular-ovate,the lateral sepals relatively wider."
