Found in northwestern Ethiopia in montane grasslands an swampy meadows at elevations of 1500 to 1600 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestrial with an erect leafy stem carrying 3 to 5, oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate-linear, grading smaller above into bract-like leaves that blooms in the summer on a terminal, erect, cylindrical, 2 to 4" [5 to 10 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with narrowly lanceolate, shorter than the pedicel floral bracts.
"This species is very similar to H bequaertii but differs in the gynostemium, in H platyanthera the lateral stigma lobes produce upturned arms while H bequaertii has small, ligulate, pendent lateral stigma lobes with no projected arms." Szlatchecko etal 2010
