Common Name Rechinger's Habenaria [German Plant Collector in Malesia 1900's]

Flower Size

Found in western New Guinea in hill forests or forests dominated with Sapotaceae at elevations around 10 to 400 meters as a medium sized, hot growing terrestrial with 4–, erect-patent, up to 20.0 cm long, 5.0 cm wide, elliptic-oblanceolate, narrowed at the base, apex acute to shortly acuminate, green above, light green below leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on an erect, elongate, 12" [30 cm] long overall, peduncle-scales distant, acuminate, rachis 6 to 8" [15 to 20 cm] long, laxly several to many flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, almost as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying light yellow or greenish-yellow flowers.

"Habenaria rechingeri can be rather easily distinguished by having a minutely ciliate ovary combined with a pair of basal lip calli. It is noteworthy that it has one of the smallest flowers in New Guinean Habenaria. H. rechingeri resembles the parapatric H. torricellensis which, however, has much larger flowers (sepals .24 to .26" vs .38 to .5" [6 to 6.5 vs 9.5 to 12.5 mm]). Tepals and lip lobes of H. rechingeri are shorter than .24" [6 mm], whereas in H. torricellensis they are usually longer than .4" [10 mm]." Kolanowska etal 2021
