Found in Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Zaďre in swamps and forests at elevations of 900 to 1000 meters as a medium to large sized, warm growing terreestrial with a single, ovoid tuber giving rise to an erect, stout, glabrous leafy stem carrying 112 to 30, lanceoalte, acute, spread, decreasing in size uo the stem leaves that blooms in the winter, spring and early summer on an erect, terminal, 4.6 to 6.8" [11.5 to 17 cm] long, lax to densely 10 to 40 flowered inflorescence with densely pubescent inside, almost glabrous outside, with 1 to 3 keels, somewhat shorter than the ovary floral bracts.
Differs from
H mira by the lateral lobes of the lips shape. In H sanfordiana the lateral lobes of the lips are slightly longer than the middle one, which are obliquely lanceolate with long caudae, in H mira the lateral lobe is much shorter than the middle one and they are oblanceolate." Szlatchecko etal 2010
