Found in Jalisco state of Mexico in pine/oak forests at elevations around 2630 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with an inclined, ellipsoid tuber giving rise to an erect, subcylindrical, angular, leafy throughout stem carrying 10, the first three reduced to sheaths with very short lamina, the following with well-developed lamina, larger when ascending, up to the middle of the plant, from there they decrease, the first extended, orbicular, obtuse, more broad, the following ascending, elliptical, obtuse, apiculate, the upper ones ascending, lanceolate, orthogonal to acuminate, below the middle of the imbricate plant the stem is concealed, above the stem is revealed, the largest 3.2 to 3.6" [8 to 9 cm] long,1.24 to 1.568" [3.1 to 4.2 cm] wide, blades yellowish green, variegated emerald green, the beige-green, lustrous, furrowed, the multinered underside, the unique smooth carina, the wavy, glandular edged leaves that blooms in the late summer and early fall on an erect, terminal, rachis rectilinear, slightly flattened, angular, 2.4" [6 cm] long, with three main ribs, held in a sparse, cylindrical cluster, simultaneously 9 flowered inflorescence with ascending, conduplicated, leaves the nectarius, lanceolate, acuminate, of 13 to 15 mm long, 5 to 7 mm wide, with five main nerves, the central one raised in carina, lowermost longer that the ovary, above shorter floral bracts and carrying ascending flowers.

"Habenaria variegata is distantly related to H. jaliscana but H. variega it is differentiated by the ovary from .6 to .84" [15 to 21 mm] long, .06 to .08" [1.5 to 2 mm] in diameter, ribs round; dorsal sepal .28" [7 mm] long; ovate-lanceolate lateral sepals, .3 to .32" [7.5 to 8 mm] long, .16" [4 mm] wide; the posterior lobe of the petals oblong, obtuse, .24 to .26" [6 to 6.5 mm] long; the anterior lobe tapered, obtuse-rounded, .28 to .3" [7 to 7.5 mm] long; the subsessile labellum with rounded side lobes, .34" [8.5 mm] long, .028" [0.7 mm] wide; the middle lobe oblong, obtuse, .3 to .32" [7.5 to 8 mm] long; the retrorse, acinaciform, acute-rounded nectary, .64" [16 mm] long; the trapeziform rostellum, shorter than the middle of the spine and the underextended stigmatic processes, contracted in the distal end. Habenaria jaliscana has an ovary of 1.2 to 1.6" [30 to 40 mm] long, .16 to .24"[4 to 6 mm] wide, winged along the nerves and also in the portion between them; dorsal sepal .34 to .4" [8.5 to 10 mm] long; the lateral sepals ovate, subacute, .4 to .56" [10 to 14 mm] long, .022 to .028" [5.5 to 7 mm] wide, the margins at the apical end sawed; the posterior segment of the petals are falcate, acute, .32 to .36" [8 to 9 mm] long; the anterior lobe almost threadlike, attenuated, acuminate, .64 to .96" [16 to 24 mm] long; unguiculated labellum; acuminate lateral lobes, .92" 23 mm] long, .048" [1.2 mm] wide; median lobe, acute, sigmoid nectary, slightly dilated in the distal part, rounded, a triangular, subacute rostellus, about two-thirds of the length of the column and extended stigmatic processes, longer than the spine, contracted towards the base."
