Found in Yunnan and north Fujian provinces of China, Japan, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan Vietnama and Thailand in damp areas of tropical evergreen hill forests at elevations of 400 to 1000 meters as a small to medium sized, cool to cold growing, mycoheterotrophic terrestrial with an ascending ligneous, scaly rhizome giving rise to an erect, blackish, slender, often branched stem with several remotely spaced sheaths that blooms in the later spring and summer on a terminal, 1.2 to 2" [3 to 5 cm] long, 5 to 8 flowered inflorescence
