Common Name Steyermark's Lepanthes [American Botanist in Venezuela 1900's]
Flower Size .25" [6 mm]
Found in northwestern Venezuela and northeastern Colombia at elevations around 2475 to 2600 meters as a small sized, cold growing epiphyte with erect, slender ramicauls enveloped completely by 9 or so lepanthiform sheaths with dilated sotia and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, reticulate nerved, sometimes well marked in purple, rounded basally acuminate leaf that blooms on 1 to 2, very congested,distchous, 1.2 to 1.4" [3 to 3.5 cm] long including the .6 to .8” [1.5 to 2 cm] long peduncle, racemose, successively single, many flowered inflorescence arisingon the back of the leaf.
There are 2 other species within Colombia that can be confused with this species, L orion which has much more obtuse sepals and an appendix that is pubescent and oblong and adpressed to the stigma and L auriculata which differs in the widely divergent sepals and an oblong, pubescent appendix that is adpressed to the stigma.
