Common Name The Split Stigma Masdevallia

Flower Size .4" [1 cm]

Found in Amazonas department of Peru at elevations around 2000 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with slender, erect, blackish ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptical, subacute, narrowly cuneate contracted below into the blackish petiolate base leaf that blooms on an ascending, arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract near the base, slender, 1.6" to 2" [4 to 5 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with as long as the pedicel floral bract.

"Superficially the small, yellow, slender tailed flower appears similar to M sanchezii with the acute tips of the petals and lip visible peeking out of the sepaline tube. The single veined lip is smooth and featureless. The truncate base is inflexibly connate to the bse of the column. The anther is operculate and nondeciduous. The stigma is shallowly cleft between 2 short, pedicellate, stigmatic lobes, a feature heretofore unknown in the genus." Luer 1998
