Common Name or Meaning Neowied's Maxillaria [In honor of Prince Maximilian of Weid- Neuwied, German Expedition leader to Brazil in early 1800's]

Found in Bahia, Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janiero, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states Brazil to Misiones Argentina in seasonally dry to wet forests at elevations of 200 to 1700 meters as a mini-miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with a aclumping, tufting, much branching rhizome giving rise to narrowly ovoid, ridged, green to purplish brown pseudobulbs enveloped by scarious bracts and carryijg 2, apical, suberect, needle-like, acute, wiry to leathery leaves that blokms in the spring and summer on a very short, lateral single flowered inflorescence .
