Common Name The Atalya Microchilus [a town in Cusco Department of Peru]

Found in Cusco department of Peru on hillsides and riverbanks as a medium sized terrestrial with a an erect, terete, leafy stem carrying 7 to 8, elliptic, subacuminate, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter on a pubescent, 17.6" [44 cm] long overall, peduncle 10.72" [26.8 cm] long, provided with 4 to 5, lax sheathing bracts, rachis 6.92" [17.3 cm] long; densely many-flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acute, much longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying externally pubescent, pink flowers.
"This species is related to the Ecuadorian M. ecuadorensis since it is a similarly robust plant with a densely-flowered inflorescence and it has flowers much the same size. However, M. atalayae is distinguished from M. ecuadorensis in having a broader .076 versus .056 to .06" [1.9 vs. 1.4 to 1.5 mm], ovate-lanceolate, not oblong-lanceolate dorsal sepal, petals that are dilated in the apical half with a lobulate apex versus ligulate-oblanceolate, entire petals, and a broader .14 to .148" versus .096" [.3.5 to 3.7 vs. 2.4 mm] labellum epichile with patent, not a semirecurved lobule."
