TYPE Drawing of Erythrodes laticalcar by © Nagler/Dod and Moscosoa 5: 232 Dod 1989

Deep shade Warm Cool LATER Summer

Common Name The Broad Spur Microchilus

Flower Size

Found in north central Dominican Republic in primary broadleaved forests at elevations around 1150 meters as a large sized, cool growing terrestrial with a trailing to ascending rhizome giving rise to a stout, basally leafy, glabrous below, distally hairy and slender stems carrying obliquely ovate-elliptic, acuminate, undulate margins, narrowing below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the later summer on a terminal, erect, hairy, to 17 cm] long, loosely many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acumminate, slightly pilose, somewhat longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying white flowers.

Very similar to other species in the Dominican Republic [except Microchilus hirtellus ] but M laticalcar is much bigger. The large flower is reminiscent of Microchilus plantagineus but the nectary is much wider and the apex is abruptly reduced in width. The flower at its peak gives the impression that the labellum is a lolling tongue. The dried labellum is much narrower at the apex than in M plantagineus. all other Dominican species [other than Microchilus erythrodoides] have smaller flowers with the apex of the lip much wider and the column almost cylindrical and with a gradual reduction from the middle to the apex."
