From Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Yugoslavia, Albania, Eastern Aegean Islands, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Central Russia, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Iran in short, poor grasslands, meadows, alpine pastures and forest fringes at elevations up to 2000 meters as a miniature to small sized, cold growing, terrestrial that has a thick, washed with violet at the tip stem and carrying 5 to 9 basal, oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate leaves the uppermost becoming leafsheaths and blooms in the later spring on a pyramidal, or oblong, 2 to 4" [5 to 10 cm] long, densly many [5 to 25] flowered inflorescence with the upermost flowers opening last and has lanceolate bracts.
