Found in southwestern Sichuan, northwestern Yunnan and southeastern Xizang provinces of China in forests, thickets and alpine meadows at elevations of 2900 to 3600 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with underground pseudobulbs connected by short rhizomes with corm-like, broadly ovoid to suboblong, 2 to 3 noded pseudobulbs and carrying a single, apical, erect, narrowly elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a lateral, suberect, red, to 10.8" [27 cm] long, 10 to 20 flowered inflorescence
