Common Name The Malipo Paphiopedilum [Area in China] - In China Ma Li Po Dou Lan

Flower Size 3 to 4" [7.5 to 10 cm]

This lithophyte from southern China and Vietnam, is found in leaf litter on limestone rocks in mixed semi-decidous to open deciduous, broadleafed mountainous cloud forests, or on steep limestone cliffs or at the summits of limestone mountains with mosses and ferns at elevations of 450 to 1450 meters in partial shade as a small sized, warm to cool growing orchid with 4 to 6, distichous, coriaceous, oblong or narrowly elliptic, acute to obtuse at the asymetric apex, dark and light green mottled dark green, heavily purple spotted and keeled beneath leaves that blooms in the spring on a single [rarely 2] flowered, green spotted with purple, white hirsute, 12" to 20" [30 to 50 cm] long, inflorescence arising from a narrowly ovate-lanceolate floral bract carrying a large flower with a nice [apple-raspberry] scent

This species likes water more than other paphs and was discovered as recently as 1984.
