Found in the Chinese Himalayas, Assam, eastern Himalayas, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Philippines, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands? and Japan in broad-leaved evergreen forests, thickets and grassy slopes at elevations of 100 to 1900 meters as a small to medium sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with obliquely ellipsoid tubers giving rise to a bracteate above stem carrying 2 to 3, sub-basal leaves and 2 to 3, oblong-elliptic to linear-oblong, subacute to acute, mucronate, narrowing below into the sheathing base leaves grading above into 3 to 13, suberect to spreading, lanceolate, acuminate sterile bracts that blooms in the later summer through mid fall on a terminal, erect, glabrous, narrow, 2.4 to 6.4" [6 to 17 cm] long, laxly many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate floral bracts.
