Common Name Slender Bog Orchid - The Rigid Platanthera - The Green Bog Orchid

Flower Size .4" [1 cm]

Found in the western US and Canada in moist meadows, seeps and along streams at elevations of 1000 to 2300 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with up to 10, oblong and obtuse, ovate to linear-lanceolate leaves with the largest basally clasping and becoming bract-like above that blooms in the later spring through summer on a stout, leafy, 3/4 to 2 1/4' [20 to 70 cm] long, loosely many flowered, racemose inflorescence with lanceolate, much longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying fragrant flowers.

"The inflorescence of P. stricta is typically an elongated laxly or remotely flowered, cylindric or subsecund raceme. In this respect, the species strongly resembles some forms of P sparsiflora. While the column is characteristically small, some forms have a large column approaching that of P sparsiflora. The scrotiform or saccate spur of P stricta, however, easily separates such forms from that species." Correll 1950
