Common Name The Volcano Living Platanthera

Flower Size .6" [1.5 cm]

Found central and southwestern Mexico at elevations of 2200 to 3100 meters as a small to giant sized, cold growing terrestrial with a leafy erect stem carrying erect, largest in the center of stem, somewhat arching, rigid, ensiform, oblanceolate, 3 somewhat raised nerved, close set , acuminate leaves that grade below and above, into bracts, the lowest adpressed to the stem, that blooms in the late summer and fall on an erect, elongate, 1.6 to 17" [4 to 42.5 cm] long, rachis angulate, cylindrical, densely several flowered inflorescence with adpressed, imbricate, concave, ovate-lanceolate to lanceoalte, acuminate, as long as to longer than the ovary floral bracts

Very similar to P limosa but p volcanica has a lanceolate lip outline while P limosa is oblong-linear. In P volcanica the petals are truncated to barely subcordiform basally; the ovate-lanceolate labellum;the nectary is almost the same diameter along the entire length, very little attenuated in the distal end and with an erect spine with a wide, short and obtuse apex.
