Flower Size

Found in Costa Rica in tropical rain forests and premontane wet forests on both sides of the cordillera at elevations of 500 to 1800 meters as a miniature to small sized, warm to cool growing, repent epiphyte with erect, short ramicauls carrying a single, apical, elliptic-oblong, rounded, gradually narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the fall on ariisng from the base of the leaf and from the rhizome, erect, peduncle naked, rachis longer than the peduncle, shorter to longer than the leaf, successively few to several flowered inflorescence with large, inflated, triangular floral bracts

Similar to and often cited as a synonym of P tripterantha but P tripterantha has narrower leaves, very small floral bracts while in P aptera they are widely inflated, triangular and large, a different lip and the sepals are not as separated as in P aperta.
