Found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in cloud forests at elevations around 2500 to 3200 meters as a small sized, cold growing epiphyte to terrestrial with fasciculate, stout, erect ramicauls enveloped by a loose, tubular sheath near the middle and 2 to 3, loose, imbricating sheaths at the base and carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, elliptical, subacute to obtuse, cuneate below into the sessile base leaf that blooms in the spring on a few to many, 2.8 to 7.6" [7 to 19 cm] long, simultaneous, more or less secund, densely many flowered inflorescence arising through a foliaceous spathe and an annulus with inflated floral bracts
