Common Name The Samac Pleurothallis [A town in Guatemala near where the first of this species was found]

Found in Altaverapaz department of Guatemala, Heridia province of Costa Rica, Bolivar state of Venezuela, Antioquia department of Colombia, Carchi, Napo, Pastaza, Morona-santiago, Loja and Zamora Chinchipe provinces of Ecuador and Brazil in extremely wet montane forests at elevations around 600 to 2400 meters as a mini-miniature sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with a short, erect ramicaul enveloped by 2 tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, obovate-obtuse, gradually narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring through summer on an erect, arising laterally from the ramicaul, 1.2" [3 cm] long, successively few flowered inflorescence with echinate, shorter than the pedicel floral bracts.
"Distinguished by the lo0ng, loose, successively flowered raceme of prickly flowers that creeps through the surrounding substrate. The sepals are acute and attenuate. The petals are irregularily long-lacerate. The lip is usually black and spathulate witha rounded apex and erect, marginal lobes in the lower third." Luer 2006
