Full ShadeHot Cool SpringSummer

Common Name The Large Leafed Psilochilus

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, the Windward Islands, Panama, Colombia and Brazil in dense cloud forests at elevations of 500 to 2200 meters as a small to medium sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with a creeping rhizome giving rise to 2 to 6, ovate-cordate to ovate-oblong, acute to acuminate, variegated, petiolate base leaves that blooms on a terminal, racemose, 1 to 3" [2.5 to 7.5 cm] long, successively 1 to 8 flowered inflorescence occurring in the winter, spring and summer.

"This species is characterized by the sessile or subsessile leaves, shortly clawed lip and prominent lip lateral lobes. The other species with sessile or subsessile leaves may be easily distinguished from P. macrophyllus based in lip shape. Morphological studies on the variation of the flower morphology within P. macrophyllus revealed that at least two forms of the lip shape are produced among populations. The differences between sessile-leaved Psilochilus was also noticed by Dressler (2003) who, however, did not decide to formally separate the two recognized groups. Based on conducted studies and considering the variation within populations two conclusions may be drawn. Previously described P. crenatifolius seems to fall into lip shape variation of P. macrophyllus hereby it is reasonable to reduce it to the rank of variety of P. macrophyllus. A total of three varieties within P. macrophyllus can be distinguished base on the leaf margin form and shape of the lip middle lobe. Since P. macrophyllus var. crenatifolius is known from a single locality it was not included in niche overlap test. This statistic calculated for other two taxa indicate that the climatic conditions preferred by these orchids are almost identical conforming to the close relation between them."
