Common Name The Spurless Pteroglossa [The specific epithet refers to the absence of a spur or mentum, which otherwise is a conspicuous feature of most genera of the Stenorrhynchos clade, including all other species of Pteroglossa]
Flower Size .8" [2 cm]
Found in Cusco department of Peru on the eastern slope of the Andes in woody shrubby semi-deciduous fields at elevations around 1400 meters as a medium sized, cool growing terrestrial with fleshy, cylindrical roots, without leaves at flowering and not seen so may be leafless, giving rise to an erect, peduncle 8" [20 cm] long, terete, provided with 5 to 7, tubular, acute sheathing bracts, rachis congested, 6.4" [16 cm] long, pubescent, 5 to 9 flowered inflorescence with prominent, green, sparsely pubescent, especially at the margins, slightly concave, ovate, acuminate, slightly shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying resupinate, fleshy, greenish white flowers with yellowish veins.
"P. acalcarata is strongly supported as sister to Pteroglossa macrantha , type species of the genus, in agreement with their overall floral similarity. Pteroglossa acalcarata can be distinguished from P. macrantha by its pubescent petals (vs. glabrous), absence of a spur (vs. labellum long-spurred), inconspicuous lateral lobes of the labellum, which are free from the sides of the column, and entirely white labellum with golden-yellow veins (versus a golden yellow labellum throat)."
