Found in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania Australia and New Zealand at elevations of 100 to 1250 meters in open forests, montane woodlands and heathy forests as miniature sized, cold growing terrestrial, mycoheterotrophic orchid occuring in heathy, open forest and woodland; often found in leaf litter beneath other vegetation with an oblong underground tuber giving rise to a reddish, erect, 20" [50 cm] long, 1 to 10 flowered inflorescence occuring in the spring and summer.
