A large sized, hot to cool growing, epiphytic orchid that is found in Assam India, eastern Himalayas, Myanmar, Thailand, southern China and Vietnam in evergreen and semi-deciduous forests on limestone cliffs or in primary montane forests at altitudes of 100 to 1300 meters with a short, stout stem carrying elliptic-oblong, unequally, obtusely bilobed or deeply emarginate apically leaves and blooms in the late winter and spring on an axillary, 1 1/2' [45 cm] long, 5 to several flowered inflorescence with ovate-elliptic, acute or subacute, cucullate bracts and fragrant, heavy textured, long lasting flowers, that is longer than the leaves.

A dottless variety from Thailand that is a small sized epiphyte with closely set stems carrying ligulate-obtuse, distichous, fleshy, slightly and unequally emarginate apically leaves that blooms on an axillary, erect, racemose, 6 flowered inflorescence with bronzy-brown, richly suffused with magenta flowers that also have a lip with white basal auricles and no scent
