Found in Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil as a medium sized, hot to warm growing, caespitose epiphytic orchid occurring in lowland rainforest and riverine areas at altitudes of 200 to 1000 meters with nearly spherical, smooth pseudobulbs subtended by evanescent, nonfoliaceous sheaths and has 2 apical, obovate, obtuse, thick, grey-green, gradually narrowing below into the conduplicate petiolate base leaves that are heavily veined on the underside and blooms in the winter and spring on a basal, 3/4" [2 cm] long, densely 8 to 10 flowered, bracteate, subcapitate racemose inflorescence, arising on newly maturing and mature pseudobulb, that is shorter than the pseudobulb and has mild, agreeable fruity scented flowers.
X subpulchrum is similar to X colleyi but it differs in the ovoid pseudobulbs, having 8 to 12 flowers, white to pink sepals and petals, and brownish red midlobe, shorter sepals, shorter petals, and smaller lip, with 5 keels on the lip, a strong putrid rotting meat smell and coming from the eastern slope of the Andes
