Common Name The Cowled Barbosella

Found from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador Peru and Bolivia in dense brush at elevations of 1400 to 3450 meters as a miniature sized, cool to cold growing, repent to caespitose epiphyte to lithophyte in moss, with a very short, approximate stem carrying a single, apical, erect, fleshy, oblanceolate, minutely tridentate apically leaf that is rough textured and blooms in the winter, spring and fall on an erect, terete, pale green, 6" [15 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with a thin, tubular, enveloping the pedicel floral bract and holding the large flower well above the leaves.
"The leaves are thick and fleshy usually between a .2 [.5 cm] and .4" [1 cm] wide and to 2" [5 cm] long and borne by much shorter ramicauls. The peduncles ae usually much longer that the leaf and bear a solitary large flower with sepals usuall over 1.2" [3 cm] long and sometime reaching 1.6" [4 cm] long,Although the flowers vary greatly in size and color the flower morphology remains surprisingly stable. The color of the flowers varies from pale yellow to green through arage to brown and purple." Luer 2000
