Found in Perak Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, Sumatra and the Philippines at elevations of 800 to 2300 [2700] meters in swampy forests, lowland forests, lower mixed, open montane forests as a small size, warm to cool growing epiphyte and ocassional terrestrial in humus deposits and moss cushions with ovoid, somewhat flattened pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, rather thick, ovate to elliptic, light to medium green leaf that is conduplicate below into the petiole and blooms in the summer in situ in Borneo on a basal, 2 to 3" [5 to 7.5 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with ovate floral bracts and slightly fragrant flowers.
Bulbophyllum sanguineomaculatum Ridl. 1896 has often been made a synonym of this species but it differs in having larger petals and has the purple markings willy nilly and not along the veins of the petals as well as open sepals below instead of united as in B membranifolium
