This species is from penninsular Malaysia, Sabah Borneo and Java in wet primary forests at elevations of 300 to 600 meters as a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with .6" [1.5 cm] between each distinct, ovoid, obtusely 4 angled pseudobulb carryijng a single apical, erect, elliptic to obovate, rounded to obtuse, narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms on a longer than the leaf, 6 to 8" [15 to 20 cm] long, basal, slender, single flowered inflorescence, with triangular, tubular sheaths that turn brown with age, and holds the flower above the leaves.
CAUTION Often cited as a synonym of B. antenniferum.
J J Vermeulen states that this species is separate from B. antenniferum but includes B ornithorhynchum as a synonym. There has been much confusion over these three species but the most distinctive separation is B antenniferum has an ovate-triangular lip that is .088 to .089" [2.2 to 2.9mm] wide and is slightly constricted approx half way along its length and is adaxially minutely hirsute in the center and glabrous to minutely hirsute towards the apex. B leysianum has an oblong, hardly widening towards its base lip that is adaxially coarsly hirsute in the midle half of its length and then grading to finely hirsute towards the base and the apex. The lip is .048 to .078" [1.2 to 1.9mm wide].
