Found in northeastern New Guinea in range forests at elevations of 300 to 500 meters as a small sized, hot growing epiphyte with a smooth, glabrous, branched rhizome giving rise to subconical-cylindrical, rugose striated, glabrous, adnate to the rhizome pseudobulbs with acuminate, tight fitting sheaths that blooms on a sessile, single flowered inflorescence with a lanceolate, longer than the ovary floral bract and carrying, almost the smallest of the genus, a golden yellow flower.

Schlechter states that the sole close relative to this species is Bulbophyllum glabrum but it has a completely glabrous lip and much blunter sepals. In habit this species resembles Bulbophyllum clandestinum but the pseudobulbs are distinct in B serrulatum. The flowers are just as elongated as in B clandestinum butnot white, but rather light orange red with the lateral sepals fused almost to the apex and it has a toothed labellum.
