Common Name The Bracteate Coccineorchis

Found in Nicaragua, Cartago and Heridia provinces of Costa Rica, Chiriqui province of Panama and Ecuador in lower montane forests and in wet oak, cloud forests at elevations of 800 to 2900 meters as a medium sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with a 4 to 8" [10 to 20 cm] long rhizome giving rise to a few, basal, ovate-elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, more or less oblique, acute to acuminate, abruptly narrowing below into the elongate, narrowly petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall and early winter on an erect, peduncle 12.4 to 21.6" [31 to 54 cm] long, provided with 3 to 4, red, tubular, triangular, acute sheathing bracts, rachis 2.4 to 5" [6 to 12.5 cm] long, red, lax below, dense above, several flowered inflorescence with oblong to broadly lanceolate, acute, herbaceous, with hyaline margins, glabrous, much longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying yellow flowers

"C bracteosa is unique in the genus with its roots distributed along the rhizome and it has the longest floral bracts of the genus as well, measuring 1.84 to 2.48" [4.6 to 6.2 cm] long, which are twice as long as the flowers." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
