Found in northwestern Vietnam in primary broad-leaved, mixed and coniferous, humid submontane and montane forests on granite and sandstone, commonly on steep shady slopes near mountain tops at elevations of 1200 to 1900 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestrial that blooms in the summer and earlier fall. Closely related to and often cited as a synonym of C formosanum, C chapaense differs in its green flowers, white column (purple at apex), its long, narrowly lanceolate floral bracts and the shortly conical, saccate spur.
