Found in West Virginia and Virginia as a miniature to small sized, cold growing, mycotrophic terrestrial that blooms in the summer on erect, 6 to 8" [15 to 20 cm] long, thicker than others in the genus, rich chestnut to mahogany in color, several flowered inflorescence carrying cleistogamus flowers.
