Found in Antioquia, Cauca, Norte de Santander, Santander and Putumayo departments of Colombia in dense forests along streams and along roadsides at elevations of 2000 to 2900 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with 1 to 2, basal, obliquely elliptic, acuminate, cordate basally into the narrow, canaliculate petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter and early spring, late summer and fall on an erect, terminal, peduncle 11.2 to 16.4" [28 to 41 cm] long, provided with 4 to 5, glabrous sheathing bracts, rachis .8 to 3.6" [2 to 9 cm] long, subdensely about 7 flowered inflorecence with elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, slightly shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small, glabrous flowers.

" Differs from others in group 1 by the single veined [sepals, single veined petals with both margins being more or less cilate. Because of its variabler lip this speccies has been considered a synonym of Cranichis ciliata but C atrata differs in the long ciliate versus pilose petals and the single veined sepals versus 2 veined in C ciliata and the subsessile, elliptic-ovate versus shortly unguiculate and obovate. Like C nigrescens this species dries black." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2020
