Found in Merida state of Venezuela, Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Santander, Boyaca, Cundinamarca, Tolima, Cauca and Nariño departments of Colombia and Chimborazo, Cañar and Pichincha provinces of Ecuador in very humid montane forest, paramo, also very wet areas with grasses and shrubs at elevations of 2200 to 3150 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with a single, ovate to ovate-elliptic, acute, basally rounded into the narrowly canaliculate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the summer and fall on an erect, terminal, delicate, terete, peduncle 15.6" [34 to 44 cm] long, provided with several remote sheathing bracts, rachis 2.4 to 3.2" [6 to 8 cm] long, cylindrical, laxly to subdensely many flowered inflorecence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous to sparsely glandular, slightly shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying glabrous flowers.

"This species appears to be similar to Cranichis parvula Renz 1948, but it has unifoliate stem (vs. 4–7-leaved), obtuse petals (vs. acute), and suborbicular (vs. elliptic-ovate) lip ornamented with five veins (vs. disc 3-veined)." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
